How to Stake COCKROACH: Step-by-Step Guide

Updated 2026-10-13 · ~6 min read

To stake COCKROACH you hold the token in a compatible wallet, pick a validator, and delegate your tokens to it — your stake then helps secure Cockroach Chain and earns you a share of staking rewards each block. You keep ownership of your tokens the entire time. Here is the full process, plus the risks worth understanding first.

Cockroach Chain is currently at devnet stage. The staking flow below describes how delegation works on the network; exact parameters such as the unbonding period are shown on the staking page.

What staking actually does

Cockroach Chain uses proof-of-stake consensus (CometBFT). Validators produce blocks, and token holders delegate their COCKROACH to validators to back them. The more honest stake behind the network, the harder it is to attack. In return, delegators receive a share of the block rewards their validator earns, minus the validator's commission.

Delegating is non-custodial: your tokens never leave your wallet's control. You are only signalling which validator your stake supports, and you can change or withdraw that at any time (subject to the unbonding period).

Step 1 — Get COCKROACH in a compatible wallet

You need the native COCKROACH token, which is also used to pay gas. Hold it in a wallet that supports Cockroach Chain. Keep a small amount unstaked so you can cover the transaction fee when you delegate and, later, when you claim rewards.

Step 2 — Choose a validator

This is the most important decision. Don't pick purely on the highest advertised reward. Compare:

  • Uptime — validators that miss blocks earn less and risk downtime penalties.
  • Commission — the percentage the validator keeps from your rewards.
  • Total stake — very large validators centralise the network; smaller reliable ones help decentralisation.
  • Track record — history of reliable operation and no slashing events.

See the validators page for how the active set works, including the top-100 active set and unlimited standby validators.

Step 3 — Delegate your stake

Open the staking interface, select your chosen validator, enter the amount of COCKROACH to delegate, and confirm the transaction in your wallet. Once confirmed, your stake is bonded and starts earning rewards from the next block.

Step 4 — Claim and compound rewards

Staking rewards accrue continuously and can be claimed to your wallet. Many stakers periodically claim and re-delegate (compound) their rewards to grow their position. You can estimate outcomes with the calculator on the staking page.

Step 5 — Understand unbonding before you need it

When you want your tokens back, you undelegate, which starts an unbonding period. During unbonding the tokens earn no rewards and cannot be moved until the period completes. Plan around this — staked tokens are not instantly liquid.

Risks to weigh

  • Slashing: validator misbehaviour can penalise a portion of delegated stake.
  • Price risk: token value can fall while your stake is bonded.
  • Liquidity: the unbonding period delays withdrawals.

COCKROACH is a utility token for gas, staking and governance. Staking rewards are protocol parameters, not guaranteed returns, and nothing here is financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to stake COCKROACH?

You need COCKROACH tokens in a compatible wallet, a small amount left unstaked to cover the transaction fee, and a validator to delegate to. You keep custody of your tokens the whole time — delegating does not transfer them to the validator.

How much can I earn staking COCKROACH?

Staking rewards are a protocol parameter, not a fixed or guaranteed rate. Your share depends on how much you stake, your validator's commission, and total network participation. Use the staking calculator on the staking page for an estimate. Rewards are not guaranteed returns.

Is my COCKROACH locked when I stake?

Delegated tokens are bonded and subject to an unbonding period when you decide to undelegate. During unbonding your tokens do not earn rewards and cannot be transferred until the period ends. Check the staking page for the current unbonding duration.

Can I lose staked tokens?

Staking carries slashing risk: if the validator you delegate to misbehaves (for example, double-signing or extended downtime), a portion of the delegated stake can be penalized. Choosing a reliable validator with good uptime reduces this risk.

What is a validator commission?

Validators run the infrastructure that secures the chain and take a percentage of your staking rewards as commission. Compare commission rates and uptime across validators before delegating rather than picking on advertised rate alone.
